A leading aspirant for the Senate in Cross River North Senatorial District, Chief Dr John Onyi Agaba, has received a delegation of the Bekwarra for Senate Promoters at his residence in Abuja.
While welcoming the group, Dr Agaba acknowledged their agitation, describing it as legitimate and in good order. He urged them to pursue their cause peacefully, with love and in the spirit of unity.
He also commended the efforts of the Governor, His Excellency Senator Prince Bassey Otu, stressing the need for collective cooperation and harmony among all stakeholders.
Dr Agaba noted that power ultimately comes from God and emphasised that, in the pursuit of leadership, all should remain guided by faith. He further observed that, although Senator Jarigbe is performing commendably in the Senate, there is merit in considering a Bekwarra son for the position in 2027.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Engr Clement Akwaji stated that their mission is straightforward: to ensure that the Senate seat in 2027 is zoned to Bekwarra Local Government Area. He explained that the delegation is in Abuja to engage key stakeholders and build broad support for their aspiration.
The group, led by Engr James Owan, expressed concern over what they described as the long-standing marginalisation of Bekwarra. They noted that the Senate seat for Cross River North has largely rotated between Ogoja and Yala, as well as Obudu and Obanliku, while Bekwarra has only held the position for a brief period of three months.
They further revealed that their advocacy has been consistent over the years. As part of their engagements, they paid a visit to elder statesman Chief Kanu Agabi, whom they commended for his statesmanship. They appealed to all aspirants to rally support for Bekwarra and to work collectively towards producing a consensus candidate who would enjoy the backing of the entire local government area.
The group expressed appreciation to Dr Agaba for the warm reception accorded them.
Engr Owan added that they encourage as many aspirants as possible from Bekwarra to step forward, demonstrating that the area is not lacking in capable leadership. He called for synergy among all aspirants, with a view to reaching a consensus that would be widely supported by the people.
They also appealed for resources to sustain their advocacy for Bekwarra’s Senate bid, assuring that such efforts would foster unity and deliver leadership that would benefit the entire Cross River North Senatorial District.
The group concluded that securing the Senate seat for Bekwarra would represent a form of liberation for its people, urging all aspirants to speak with one voice and trust in God for the outcome.
