Governor Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu has been selected by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Cross River chapter, to receive its 2026 Platinum Meritorious Service Award — the association’s foremost recognition for outstanding contributions to healthcare and leadership.
The decision, ratified during the NMA’s Ordinary General Meeting, celebrates the governor’s efforts in overhauling the state’s health system and bettering the welfare of medical workers.
NMA State Chairman Dr Ezoke Epoke, in the official nomination letter, cited several achievements driving the recognition: the absorption of doctors into the Civil Service, implementation of the revised CONMESS salary framework, extended tenure for health sector staff, the setting up of the State Hospital Management Board, and the rehabilitation of primary healthcare centres and general hospitals across the state.
The association noted that these measures have raised morale among healthcare workers and broadened public access to quality medical services.
The award presentation will take place at the NMA Cross River State Branch’s Annual General Meeting, Scientific Conference, and Award Night, holding on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at 5:00 p.m., at Hogis Royale Banquet Hall, Calabar.
