Traditional rulers across the Northern Senatorial District of Cross River State have once again expressed joy and appreciation as High Chief Higgins Peters fulfils another phase of his commitment to support the traditional institution in the region. The second phase of the monthly stipend initiative has been successfully disbursed, covering the months of February, March, and April for 109 Clan Heads and five Paramount Rulers spread across the five Local Government Areas of Cross River North.
The initiative traces back to September 6, 2025, when High Chief Higgins Peters made the pledge during the Bekwara New Yam Festival, an event where he was honoured with a prestigious chieftaincy title. At the ceremony, he announced his decision to personally supplement the monthly stipends of traditional rulers in the district with ₦10,000 for each Clan Head and ₦20,000 for each Paramount Ruler. The pledge, he stated, would be sustained as a lifelong commitment in recognition of the crucial roles traditional leaders play in maintaining peace, preserving culture, and providing community leadership.
High Chief Higgins Peters first honoured the pledge on November 22, 2025, when he released the initial payment covering three months — November, December, and January — benefiting over 120 traditional leaders across the Northern Senatorial District. The latest payment for February, March, and April marks the second phase of the initiative, reaffirming his dedication to strengthening and supporting the traditional institution in Cross River North.
Reacting to the gesture, one of the Paramount Rulers in the district expressed heartfelt appreciation, stating that in his more than twenty years on the throne, he had not witnessed such a steady and personal commitment to the welfare of traditional rulers from any individual. According to him, the initiative demonstrates genuine respect and recognition for the custodians of culture and community leadership.
Observers across the region note that the initiative reflects a leadership philosophy that has come to be associated with High Chief Higgins Peters — a culture of honouring commitments and standing firmly by promises made.
